Not All PRP is Equal

Why Standardisation Matters for Optimising Clinical Outcomes

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is widely used across regenerative disciplines, but the quality, composition, and concentration of PRP can vary significantly between different preparation systems. However, many PRP protocols and processing kits are unable to deliver a therapeutic platelet dose, resulting in inconsistent patient outcomes and limited clinical efficacy.

Alocuro’s PRO-PRP system was developed to address these limitations with a reproducible, closed-system protocol capable of delivering high-concentration, high-platelet-dose PRP tailored to the clinical indication.

Sources of Variability in PRP

Platelet Recovery and Yield

Platelet recovery is the proportion of platelets captured from whole blood within the PRP fraction. Alocuro’s ultra-high recovery rate (90% average) provides clinicians with greater control over platelet dosing. Platelet yield is influenced by numerous factors including choice of anticoagulant, device design and technical factors.

Leukocyte Content

Leukocytes can influence inflammatory signalling and cellular activity. Some protocols favour reduced leukocyte content for intra-articular applications, while others utilise leukocyte-containing preparations for select soft-tissue protocols. Systems that allow adjustment of leukocyte inclusion support alignment to indication-specific protocol frameworks.

Red Blood Cell (RBC) Contamination

Collection of RBCs in the PRP fraction can alter the biological profile and injectate pH delivered to the target site. RBC’s are not desirable in PRP generally, and particularly excluded for PRP use within joints. Minimising RBC inclusion through effective clinician control of the collection ‘stop point’ is an essential compont of Alocuro system design. PRP is intended to be ‘yellow’, not ‘orange’ or ‘red’

PRP Volume and Concentration

Differences in kit design and separation mechanics affect the volume of plasma and platelets captured. Platelet concentration relative to baseline and final injectate volume both influence the total platelet dose and the cellular composition of the preparation. Alocuro system offers 5 device sizes so platelet dose and PRP volume can be customised to the patient’s clinical need.
